How a solar battery works with your system

Without a battery, that extra power gets exported to the grid, usually at a lower rate than you pay to buy power back at night. A battery stores that extra generation instead, so you draw on your own power after dark rather than buying it from the retailer. Depending on the setup, a hybrid inverter and battery combination can also keep essential circuits running during a blackout, though this depends on how the system is configured. It isn't something every battery installation includes by default, and we'll tell you plainly which one you're getting.
There's a difference between whole-home backup and essential-circuits backup, and it changes both the cost and what actually stays on when the grid goes down. Whole-home backup keeps everything running, which needs a bigger battery and more switchboard work. Essential-circuits backup runs a smaller, chosen set of circuits, fridge and lighting for example, off a smaller battery. Do you need a battery? Honest answer
A battery pays off fastest for households that use a lot of power in the evening, when solar isn't generating anymore. Think cooking dinner, running the dryer, heating or cooling the house after work, the hours when a household without a battery is buying every watt back from the grid. If most of your usage happens during the day, you're already capturing the value of your solar directly, and a battery adds less to the bill math. Blackout backup is a separate reason to install one, and worth it on its own for some households regardless of how the numbers stack up, particularly if you work from home or rely on medical equipment. We'd rather tell you honestly where you sit before you spend the money than sell you a battery you don't really need.

Battery size is measured in kWh of storage, and the right size depends on your evening usage and whether backup power matters to you.
